Days 1 : Skukuza Rest Camp

Your adventure begins in Kruger’s largest and most established rest camp, situated along the Sabie River. This area is rich in riverine forest and attracts specials such as African Finfoot, Green-backed Heron, Black Crake, and Retz’s Helmetshrikes. The camp itself is also excellent for casual birding, with regular sightings of Purple-crested Turaco, Bearded Scrub Robin, and White-browed Robin-Chat.

Day 2-3 : Satara Rest Camp

Next, we journey north into classic savanna country. Satara’s open grasslands and scattered knobthorn trees are prime hunting grounds for raptors and ground birds. The Satara area is renowned for its rich birdlife, especially savanna and grassland specialists. With its mix of thornveld, scattered trees, and open plains, you’ll experience some of the best birding in South Africa. Look out for Kori Bustard, Secretarybird, Martial Eagle, Southern Ground Hornbill, and the charismatic Red-crested Korhaan. Nocturnal drives may offer glimpses of Spotted Eagle-Owl and Bronze-winged Courser.

Day 4-5 : Lower Sabie Rest Camp

Lower Sabie offers some of the best riverfront birding in the park. The Sabie River supports an abundance of waterbirds including Saddle-billed Stork, Goliath Heron, African Spoonbill, and African Jacana, while woodlands and reedbeds nearby attract Orange-breasted Bushshrike, African Reed Warbler, and Woodland Kingfisher (seasonal).

Day 6-7 : Berg-en-Dal Rest Camp

Tucked into the rugged southwestern hills, Berg-en-Dal features a mix of montane bushveld and acacia woodland. Target species here include Brown-headed Parrot, African Barred Owlet, Yellow-rumped Tinkerbird, and Scarlet-chested Sunbird. The camp trail is excellent for early morning birding before your final game drive.
