Join Andrew Aveley, Photographer & Private Guide, in partnership with Mario Paul, founder of Wild Birding Africa, professional bird and nature guide for an immersive five-day bird photography workshop based in White River, Mpumalanga, gateway to the iconic Kruger National Park.
Designed for amateur and intermediate photographers, this workshop combines guided field sessions, practical photographic instruction, image review, and ongoing mentorship in a relaxed and supportive small-group environment.
This is a workshop built around bird photography first, with a strong focus on improving your skills in the field while enjoying some of the best birding and photographic opportunities in the Lowveld.

Andrew and Mario are available throughout the workshop, not only during drives and classroom sessions, but also over meals and during downtime, to answer questions, assist with settings, discuss images, and help participants get the most from the experience.

What Makes This Workshop Different
This is not a general safari with a bit of birding added in. This workshop is designed specifically for photographers who want to improve their ability to photograph birds, whether perched, feeding, interacting, or in flight.
While mammals and other wildlife may certainly be enjoyed when photographic opportunities arise, the workshop focus remains firmly on bird photography, bird behaviour, and birding-related fieldcraft.
On our first workshop, we recorded approximately 180 bird species, giving participants a rich and diverse range of photographic opportunities across a variety of habitats.
What You Will Learn?
Throughout the workshop, participants will receive practical guidance in the field and during afternoon sessions, with topics including:
Printed or digital notes can also be provided to support the workshop content, so that participants do not need to rely only on memory or handwritten notes during the trip.
Accommodation Options
Participants will stay in a private home or villa within a private estate in White River.
Accommodation will be comfortable, relaxed, and well suited to a small-group workshop environment, allowing guests to unwind, share meals, review images, and continue discussions after time in the field.
As accommodation may vary depending on the selected property for each workshop, full details will be shared with participants prior to arrival.
Meals & Refreshments
The workshop includes:

- Packed or practical field meals where appropriate while in Kruger National Park
- Tea, coffee, water, and standard refreshments
Meals are intended to be relaxed and enjoyable, complementing the personal and informal atmosphere of the workshop.
Guests should be advised that any personal snacks, speciality drinks, alcohol, or specific dietary extras should be brought along by the participant unless otherwise arranged in advance.
Workshop Field Structure
The Kruger photography component of the workshop will include:
- 2 half days in Kruger National Park
- 1 full day in Kruger National Park
These sessions are designed to provide a balanced mix of field time, image review, discussion, and mentoring, while giving participants meaningful opportunities to work on bird photography in different habitats and changing light conditions.
Routes and areas may vary depending on season, bird activity, habitat, weather, and current photographic opportunities.
Suggested Workshop Structure

1
Arrival, Introduction, and Local Session
Arrival in White River, check-in, welcome briefing, and introductory session.
A practical first session may include local birding and photography in a more controlled environment, helping assess participant skill levels, equipment, settings, and workshop goals.

2-4
Kruger Bird Photography Sessions and Learning Blocks
These days will include a combination of:
- Two half-day sessions in Kruger National Park
- One full-day session in Kruger National Park
- Classroom-based discussion, image review, and editing guidance
- Continued mentoring and practical support

Wrap-Up and Departure
A final session, review, or local photographic opportunity may be included depending on timing, followed by workshop wrap-up and departure.

For less experienced photographers, workshop notes should clearly explain important concepts and techniques in a simple, practical way for later reference.
Image Review &Post-Workshop Feedback
Participants will be encouraged to build a selection of approximately 25 of their strongest images from the workshop.
Feedback on these images will be provided after the workshop via an online session such as Microsoft Teams, or another agreed platform.
This follow-up session gives participants time to review and edit their work properly, and allows for more thoughtful, structured feedback once the workshop has ended.
