Panorama Route Safaris

Discover the Panorama Route Mpumalanga’s Scenic Masterpiece

Few journeys in South Africa can compare to the breathtaking beauty of the Panorama Route. Winding through the dramatic landscapes of the Mpumalanga Highlands, this route offers some of the most spectacular scenery on the African continent — where lush forests, towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and deep canyons come together to create a natural wonderland.

A full-day Panorama Tour with Wild Photo Africa is the perfect complement to your Kruger National Park safari. It’s an opportunity to slow down, breathe in the mountain air, and take in the grandeur of one of South Africa’s most scenic and historically rich regions. Our professional guides bring the landscape to life — sharing local legends, geological marvels, cultural stories, and the unique flora and birdlife that make this area so remarkable.

Highlights of the Panorama Route

The Three Rondavels & Blyde River Canyon

The Blyde River Canyon is one of the largest green canyons in the world — a staggering 26 kilometers long and over 800 meters deep. Its lush slopes are covered in subtropical vegetation, fed by the winding Blyde River below.
The Three Rondavels, massive round rock formations resembling traditional African huts, stand proudly at the canyon’s edge. They offer a view that truly captures the essence of the Lowveld’s natural beauty — a photographer’s dream with sweeping vistas of the escarpment, valleys, and shimmering river below.

Bourke’s Luck Potholes

Where the Blyde and Treur Rivers meet, centuries of swirling water have sculpted the rock into magnificent cylindrical formations known as Bourke’s Luck Potholes.
Bridges and walkways allow visitors to explore this geological masterpiece safely, admiring the smooth rock patterns and golden sandstone walls. Legend has it that a prospector named Tom Bourke once tried his luck here for gold — hence the name. Although he never struck it rich, nature certainly did!

God’s Window

Arguably the most famous stop on the route, God’s Window offers a panoramic view that feels like gazing out over the edge of the world.
On clear days, you can see all the way across the Lowveld to the distant Kruger National Park and Mozambique border. The viewpoint is framed by ancient rainforests filled with moss, ferns, and wild orchids — a mystical and peaceful contrast to the rugged cliffs below.

Lone Creek Falls

Nestled in the lush Sabie region, Lone Creek Falls tumbles dramatically 68 meters into a forested gorge. A short and easy walk through indigenous woodland brings you to the base of the falls — a perfect spot for photographs and a refreshing mist on a warm day.
This area is part of the Sabie Waterfall Route, where crystal-clear mountain streams weave through dense forest filled with bird calls and butterflies.

Berlin Falls & Lisbon Falls

A short distance apart, these two stunning waterfalls are among the tallest in the province.
Berlin Falls cascades gracefully down a natural chute of red rock, often compared to a candle flame, while Lisbon Falls, named after Portuguese settlers in the area, plunges 94 meters in twin streams into a deep, turquoise pool.
Both locations are set against a backdrop of lush vegetation and are popular spots for landscape and nature photographers.

The Gorge Lift Company (Graskop)

For a completely new perspective on the escarpment, visit The Graskop Gorge Lift Company.
This modern attraction features a glass-fronted lift that descends 51 meters down into the indigenous Afromontane forest below. Wooden walkways and suspension bridges lead visitors through the forest floor, where waterfalls, mossy rocks, and birdlife abound. Interactive displays explain the ecology and geology of the region, making it an educational and unforgettable stop for all ages.

Flora and Birdlife

The Panorama Route lies within the Afromontane and mistbelt forest zones, creating a haven for plant and bird enthusiasts alike. The region is home to towering yellowwoods, ferns, tree fuchsias, and vibrant wildflowers that bloom along the roadside in summer.
Birdwatchers can look forward to spotting species such as the Knysna turaco (Loerie) with its brilliant green plumage, Cape batis, black-headed oriole, forest canary, and the striking African crowned eagle soaring above the cliffs.
Along the rivers and waterfalls, you might encounter malachite kingfishers, African black ducks, and even trogons — a photographer’s delight!

An Awesome Experience One of the best decisions we made while planning for our South Africa trip was to choose these people to show us the infamous Kruger National Park. We had two incredible days with VJ inside the park. An no words would be enough to thank VJ for his vast knowledge perfectly blended with professionalism. Between two days we spent almost 18 hours within the park and we managed to see all possible animals. More importantly, we gathered wealth of knowledge about this incredible park. As a company Wild Photo Africa Safaris has proven me wrong that private safaris are more expensive than the Group ones.

Great Kruger tour for photographers If you are one of those people slinging a long telephoto lens and only shoot in RAW, this is your operator for a Kruger safari. Even if you only have an iPhone, this is also your operator if you value high-quality photos. My family and I opted for a private full-day safari at Kruger and were not disappointed. Our safari guide, VJ, was extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the park and was able to get us to the Big 5 (and then some) within a couple of hours. VJ made the 10+ hour safari fun and enjoyable. More importantly, he is a talented photographer himself who knows what other serious photographers are looking for and can give very helpful hints on how to get a great shot. If there is a branch that is blocking the perfect view of that giraffe, he will move the vehicle until you have a clean shot. There are lots of great tour operators at Kruger and they all know each other and share information on animal sightings, but if you are a serious photographer I would highly recommend a private vehicle with this operator, Wild Photo Africa Safaris.

Highly Recommend - Wild Photo Africa Safaris for visiting the Kruger National Park Who needs David Attenborough or Google when you have Wild Photo Africa Safaris and a very professional guide, Viljoen Jordaan (VJ). On Thursday, 19 September 2024 my financé, mum and I booked a private game drive, we were picked up at 5am from our accommodation in Marloth Park and VJ drove us to the Crocodile Bridge Gate (KNP). Well what a memorial day and experience. My financé and I are usually very lucky on our day trips to the Kruger National Park, this time was an exception and a once in a lifetime experience, we watched 8 lions trying to take down a buffalo, wow what an awesome, awesome, awesome sighting, we watched for well over an hour, we also saw lots of elephants, zebra, wildebeest, buffalo, giraffe, springbuck, bucks, kudu, nala, water hogs, leopards, hippo, crocodile, as well as lots of different species of birds. VJ was very knowledgeable from animals, birds and trees, you could ask him anything, almost like having your own Google onboard. Thank you VJ and Wild Photo Africa Safaris for a wonderful day out and memories that will last a lifetime. We will continue to come back for many, many more! I would highly recommend your company and services to anyone looking for a memorable experience. You are very prompt, professional and making a booking with you was an absolute pleasure. We were so lucky!

Absolutely fantastic!!!! We had the best time ever! We were looking for a German-speaking guide and all arrangements were easily possible in German. Unfortunately, due to family matters, Mario was unable to accompany us himself, but he immediately provided a great replacement. Despite everything, both were always in contact to give us the best safari possible and Marios wife even organized a delicious braai for us in one of the Kruger Camp.

Awesome We had such an awesome experience with Mario. This was a delayed 60th birthday present for me and didn’t disappoint!! Before the day I was at best a basic photographer keen, but clueless. Mario was super patient with us both. Clear and non technical, his information was easily absorbed. He adjusted settings on our cameras and within just a few hours we were taking photos at a level we would never have expected. Add to this his passion and knowledge of the bush and Mario completes the all round package. We are not Big 5 chasers and this added to the day as we could spend the day learning about all types of animals and plants in Kruger. Whether you are looking for a photographic experience or simply want a safari with one of the most genuine people we have come across, you won’t be disappointed. 10/10 for Mario.

We had the absolute pleasure of spending the day on safari with Ockie Botha from Wild Photo Africa, and what an unforgettable experience it was From start to finish, Ockie was nothing short of exceptional. His knowledge of the bush is truly outstanding and not only could he find incredible sightings, but he also took the time to explain animal behavior, ecosystems, and the finer details that most people would completely miss. It added such depth to the entire experience. And the sightings were simply unbelievable. We were lucky enough to see lions, cheetahs, and wild dogs all in one day something incredibly rare along with so many other special moments in the bush. It honestly felt like a once-in-a-lifetime safari. What really stood out, though, was Ockie himself. His passion, professionalism, and genuine enthusiasm for what he does made the day even more special. He made us feel completely at ease, tailored the experience to us, and ensured we got the most out of every moment. If you are considering a safari with Wild Photo Africa, we cannot recommend Ockie highly enough. He is a world-class guide. Thank you, Ockie, for an incredible day we will never forget

Our day-long photo safari with Andrew was absolutely the highlight of our year. I was spoiled by my family with this day trip for my birthday and I would not be exaggerating if I say that the trip was nothing short of inspiring. I’m primarily a bird photographer and was feeling very “stuck” when it came to photographing wildlife - our trip with Andrew got me firmly unstuck, inspiring me to try new things, look at things in new ways and remember when it’s time to put the camera down and just enjoy the moment. Spent the day learning and laughing and it was the best birthday gift possible!

We had an absolutely outstanding day on our Kruger National Park safari, and a huge part of that experience was thanks to our incredible driver and guide! From the very beginning, he was exceptionally friendly, professional, and attentive. He made every effort to ensure that all participants felt comfortable and that everyone’s individual wishes were taken into account. Whether it was spending a little more time at a sighting, adjusting the route, or answering our many questions, he handled everything with patience, flexibility, and genuine enthusiasm. His knowledge was impressive — every question we asked was answered quickly, clearly, and with fascinating detail. At the same time, he drove very safely and considerately, so we always felt completely relaxed and well taken care of. Thanks to him, this safari was not just a tour, but a truly memorable experience. I felt perfectly looked after from start to finish and would highly recommend this excursion — especially with such a dedicated and passionate guide. Thank you for making this day in Kruger National Park so special!

VJ was a very competent and friendly guide. He picked us up promptly in the morning and drove us to the gate of Kruger National Park. Once there, he made entry very easy, and shortly after entering the park, we saw our first rhinos. He explained the origins of every animal and plant, including which ones are particularly beneficial to animals and insects. Except for the water buffalo, we saw all of the Big Five by mid-morning. He took plenty of time to stop everywhere and explain the animals' behavior. He was also able to explain in-depth questions very clearly to us laypeople, making it incredibly enjoyable to spend the whole day with him and listen to his knowledge. I would book him again for a safari anytime.

An exceptional safari experience in Kruger National Park. Wild Photos Africa safaris is the definition of professional. If you want the very best, then my guide Viljeon is absolutely the guide for you. (I also believe his business partner Mario is just as passionate). His depth of knowledge about wildlife and birds completely blew me away — every drive was fascinating, informative, and exciting. You can truly feel his passion for the bush, and it elevates the entire safari experience. I couldn’t recommend him more highly. We saw so many animals and birds. I truely enjoyed and will definitely use them again when I return.

We were quite fortunate to have found this entity while searching for Birding Safari’s in the Kruger Park. Spent a full day with VJ and his expansive, well experienced knowledge. Highly recommended as they understand the territories, habitats, bird calls, and locations of many of the species. Was an amazing, memorable day spotting 126 species half of which we had never encountered before.
